Dry Eye Clinic

What is Dry Eye?

Dry eyes occur due to people not producing enough tears or having tears which are of poor quality.

Most people may have noticed their eyes getting dry at some point. This can occur due to many reasons such as lack of water/sleep, excess screen usage or a poor diet. Common symptoms tend to include grittiness, soreness and watery eyes (yes, watery eyes!). For a lot of people, these issues can be persistent and can be a detriment to their quality of life.

We’ve invested in our technology to assess and manage dry eye and have years of experience doing it. We can assess the severity of it and help form a treatment plan to help manage it. As part of our dry eye assessment, we map the front of the eye and assess the natural tear film using Corneal Topography and use various other tools and techniques.

Can Dry Eye be cured?

This is often a chronic condition which doesn’t necessarily have a cure but can be well managed. We work with our patients to figure out the best course of action for each individual person. We’re all unique individuals and therefore require unique, tailor-made treatment plans. A lot of the treatments we currently offer are highly specialised and are not available routinely in most places.

Beyond regular lubricating drops, there’s a lot that can be done to help.

See some examples of what we can do below. This is not an exhaustive list - there are even more options available:

Some of the treatments we offer

  • OptiLIGHT is one of the latest innovations in dry eye therapy.

See our dedicated page for more information on this

  • Punctal plugs are small plugs made of medical-grade silicone which sit in your tear duct like the image below.

This helps reduce the drainage of tears and keeps them on the eyes a bit longer to stop them drying out.

This is a painless and reversible process but has many studies showing its effectiveness, particularly when people simply don’t produce enough tears.

They are available in permanent and temporary (dissolvable) forms.

  • Often the cause of dry eye can be a condition called blepharitis.

This is an inflammation of the eyelids which can lead to ‘dandruff’ building up on the eyelashes and eyelids.

The NuLids Pro device is extremely effective at cleaning the microscopic buildup which happens over time.

This is a painless procedure although is sometimes described as ‘ticklish’ See the video below for more information on how it’s performed.

  • The OmniLenz is an exciting new treatment for dry eyes. It involves applying a special contact lens containing amniotic tissue which helps heal the eye from dry eye damage.

This contact lens is left in for a week allowing the nutrients to be absorbed by the eye before being removed. The effects of this treatment have been shown to last 6 months+!
